12 Sustainability in Science
12.11 Future Trends
12.11.1 Africa
The continent will increase its investments in science and research and development
will raise economic productivity by enhancing innovation and the development
of start-ups, jobs, and SMEs. Science will remain crucial for reducing poverty
and disease and could lead to the generation of knowledge. Increased investment
in sustainability science will significantly affect the relationship between water,
food, health, and climate change. In addition, science will increasingly embrace
the concept of biomimicry for driving sustainability.
12.11.2 Asia
In the future, the research agenda will be driven by sustainability science. It will
also offer insight on the best way forward in addressing development challenges in
Asian countries. Asia is also poised to tackle the major challenges that impede it
from attaining sustainability. Due to its contribution to pollution, the continent will
have many cities that model biomimicry or nature. Finally, more buildings in this
continent will be constructed mimicking on nature principles.
12.11.3 Australia
Sustainable innovation will continue driving biomimicry. Sustainability science will
become a major driver of innovation and economic progress. Also, sustainability
science will become a priority in many mitigation measures to ensure that there is
viable production and development.
12.11.4 Europe
Sustainability science will contribute to the development of a better Lisbon strategy.
The Lisbon strategy is a 10-year strategy that seeks to make the European Council
