10 Sustainability
10.9.1 Recycled Journal
Journals can be created using recycled paper. Neatly tear pages from old notebooks
with extra pages. Notebooks in the classroom or at home could be used. All the
paper should be stacked to ensure that it is appropriately lined up and turned the
appropriate way. Card stock should then be positioned on the top and bottom of each
paper stack. Re-check to ensure that all pages are lined up and staple them on the
left side to bind them. After creating the books, draw a design on the back or front
covers. Draw things that are related to sustainability, including trees, animals, plants
as well as other naturally occurring organisms. As you work on the activity, use the
recycling knowledge to explore more types of materials that could be recycled and
gain insight on the importance of recycling.
10.9.2 Help the Community
Community members or groups should participate in cleanup activities within their
community. Select a specific area in the community for the exercise or go to a local
park. Pick up trash and tend to plants or a garden around the area. This helps groups
be proud of their environment and creates awareness about an area they see every
day.
10.9.3 Upcycling
Upcycling entails taking something old and converting it into something that is
usable again. It can be used as a home project with some of the examples being
turning milk jugs into bird houses or turning old clothes into backpacks. Students
can also decorate old glass jars to become small storage containers. The knowledge
on how to recycle can enable you to understand the significance of minimizing
consumption and reusing commodities.
10.10 Individual Matter: Muhammad Yunus
Yunus was born on June 28, 1940 and is an economist, banker, leader of civil
society, and social entrepreneur (see Fig. 10.23). His creation of Grameen Bank
and ideas of microfinance/microcredit (type of banking service offered to lowincome or unemployed persons or groups that lack access to other financial services)
awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. The bank gives loans to entrepreneurs
whose income status does not enable them to qualify for contemporary bank loans.
