Is it possible to achieve a Utopian society ? What is an ideal Utopian society
according to you? In what ways can we reduce societal inequalities today?
10.7.7 Technology and Infrastructure
One of the biggest concerns in terms of environmental protection is how to
use technologies accordingly in order to preserve natural resources. It is safe
to say that sustainability depends on the evolution of technology . In particular,
alternative technologies that will ultimately help with the creation of a sustainable
economy. Globalization has also played an important role within technology as
some companies opt for a reduction of workers on the ground, while others try
to reduce production costs by outsourcing (Jain and Lee 2012). In other words, they
will sign contracts with individuals that are in other areas of work in order to fulfill
a job. More often than not, this type of outsourcing involves paying cheaper wages
to candidates abroad. However, it can also be argued that outsourcing from abroad
can lead to a bigger understanding of international problems that other societies
face and without this information, it would be impossible or at least very difficult
to even find out what is truly happening in other areas of the world. Therefore,
proper management of technology and information becomes valuable as it can help
find solutions to sustainability problems in areas such as health, education, and
management of natural resources on an international community level.
Furthermore, a sustainable infrastructure tries to fulfill social needs while
reducing the impact of production on future generations. This might be done through
appropriate design, construction, and operation of enterprises because in order to
achieve sustainable economic growth, capitalist industrial processes that are so
harmful to the earth must be abandoned. Examples of appropriate design that led to
sustainable infrastructure are the “zero-carbon” desert city of Masdar and the BRTlite system that seeks to reduce congestion and offer alternative mode of transport
to the poor in Lagos.
How can we create a society that has sustainable infrastructure and technology?
