10 Sustainability
promoting alternative ways of consumption within areas where large amounts of
people gather or simply introducing the 3Rs scheme. People should always be
informed about the impact their consumption has on the environment. One relevant
example is how the Japanese education system has taught children to be responsible
for their own schools by cleaning at the end of the day. They are not obliged to
do this, in fact, it is quite the opposite, they do this because they feel a sense of
belonging and tradition to that specific place. If one sees how the local environment
is being destroyed by local consumption, they may be influenced to begin creating
new ideas on how to slow down consumption.
How should reduce, reuse, and recycle guide our consumption patterns? What
is our role as consumers in economic sustainability?
10.7.6 Labor and Welfare
Welfare, in terms of socioeconomic terms, can at times be referred to as equal
distribution of wealth within populations. Thus, economic sustainability can offer
a sound response to the main issues involved in income inequality of both capital
and labor resources in a society. It can be argued that if a state is playing an active
role in ensuring the growth of their own economies in an economically and socially
sustainable way, a sustainable and advanced welfare state could be created alongside
people who are willing to work hard towards necessary change. A welfare state is
a system whereby the state is committed in protecting the well-being and health
of citizens, particularly the ones who require social and financial needs through
grants, pensions as well as other benefits. An example is the United Kingdom that
is committed towards meeting the social and financial needs of its citizens.
On the other hand, sometimes the most profound examples are focused on individuals and not the state. Some industries have implemented programs that improve
labor and productivity, which in turn improve waste reduction and lower energy
consumption . In this case, businesses are contributing directly to the development
of a healthier and educated society, and also presenting new opportunities for the
population to help themselves through support given to socially disadvantaged
groups. Also, the promotion and encouragement of industries’ leaders to create
Labor Unions within their enterprises can result in a more horizontal way of
communication. This can be the basis of a circular enterprise where those who
produce can freely bring ideas or ways of improvement to others in the industry.
Circular enterprises are founded on closed-loop production-consumption models
that can convert dirt or trash into wealth or treasure.
