movement of mosquitoes. An example of a successful strategy deployed is the Tiger
Mosquito Surveillance Network in France (Calba et al. 2017).
Do you know of any in Africa?
Countries should embed health into their national adaptation plans and programs.
This solution has been adopted in Macedonia to ensure that health becomes an
integral part of its plans. The third strategy is training and awareness-raising
activities. States can develop learning courses that cover climate change and health.
The training should also aim to raise awareness and enhance knowledge on the
health impacts of climate change among the general public. For example, the
Nairobi work program has developed a five-step process that aims to address
problems associated with climate change. Despite not being overly successful, the
process has played a crucial role in improving healthcare. In addition, long-term
collaborations could be instrumental for the development of early warning systems
for infectious diseases through the consideration of climate change.
Identify other African nations that have been successful in coming up with
strategies aimed at addressing tropical diseases.
5.5 Sustainable Solutions: Green Health
Green Health is a sustainable way of reducing the environmental effect of healthcare. The healthcare sector leads to the generation of large volumes of pollutants,
including mercury and dioxins during the process of treatment. The disposals,
including syringes that have been used, could pollute the environment because of
the remnants of certain drugs. Additionally, healthcare makes use of resources, such
as plastics, lumber, and others, that contribute to habitat destruction, biodiversity
loss, and the impairment of an ecosystem’s health. As advised by the World
Medical Association (2018), there is a need for the global health community
to embrace environmentally responsible approaches. Achieving change requires
raising awareness as well as sustained advocacy, including making health practice
response to the environment. Despite climate change making a crucial contribution
to the spread of diseases, it has been established that the healthcare community itself
also plays a pertinent role in harming the environment, thus increasing the likelihood
of some of these diseases spreading. Towards this end, there are several ways of
making clinics and hospitals respond to the environment. Some of the methods are
prudent waste management, including limiting waste incineration and minimizing
paper use by replacing with electronic medical records. Non-hazardous wastes also
need to be recycled responsibly. The design and construction of hospitals can also
be in such a way that they make efficient use of clean energy as well as optimizing
