unified symbol of forest and people, and she stands beyond any caste, class, and
religion.
It is to be noted that stakeholders of all the three sectors of mangroves put least
weightage on alternative livelihood related activities like seaweed culture, oyster
culture etc., which may be due to lack of awareness of such services amongst the
people. The mangroves of this lower Gangetic deltaic complex can be conserved
through awareness generation programmes at regular intervals not merely in the
form of formal training but also by practical oriented hands - on -training through
pilot scale projects (preferably on oyster culture, seaweed culture, biofertilizer manufacturing from mangrove litter, fish feed preparation from salt marsh grass, preparation of health drinks from fruits of Sonneratia apetala etc.), which are
non-conventional in nature. This will allow the island dwellers of this mangrove
dominated deltaic complex to think out of the box system.
