At about 990 °C, the samples of leaf, stem and root were mineralized separately.
Formation of carbon monoxide is possible at this temperature even in the presence
of excess oxygen. The complete oxidation is reached through a tungsten trioxide
catalyst which is passed by the gaseous reaction products. The samples were finally
analyzed through CHN mode, which is the most universal of the analysis mode
because of the combination of the reagent design and the optimize combustion control parameters and expressed in percentage (Hedges and Stern 1984). Calibration
was done using 2, 5-Bis (5-tert-butyl-benzoxazol-2-yl) thiophene (C% = 72.53;
H% = 6.09%; N% = 6.51; O% = 7.43; S% = 7.44%) as calibration standard. The
final ouput did not show much deviation from the standard (for carbon = ± 0.37%,
for nitrogen = 0.07%).
Report Cards of Carbon and Nitrogen Storage During Seedling
Stage
The species – wise report cards for the seedlings of each of the five dominant true
mangrove species of Indian Sundarbans (Tables 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, and 7.6), helped
to develop (i) carbon and nitrogen storage potential series of selected mangrove
seedlings, and (ii) zone-wise or sector-wise adaptability of the selected mangrove
species.
Sonneratia apetala Seedlings
Table 7.2 clearly depicts that S. apetala seedlings exhibit maximum mean AGB in
the eastern sector followed by western and central sectors. The vegetative parts
contributing to the biomass of the species also exhibit similar trends (Figs. 7.4, 7.5,
7.6, and 7.7).
The mean AGC of S. apetala seedlings exhibits similar trend with AGB (Figs. 7.8,
7.9, 7.10, and 7.11).
Avicennia marina Seedlings
It is clear from Table 7.3 that A. marina seedlings exhibit highest mean AGB in the
hypersaline central Indian Sundarbans followed by the western and eastern sectors.
The mean biomass of the individual vegetative parts synchronized with this spatial
order (Figs. 7.12, 7.13, 7.14, and 7.15).
The mean AGC of A. marina seedlings exhibits similar trend with AGB
(Figs. 7.16, 7.17, 7.18, and 7.19).
