Photo 7 Xia Bu fiber from Anthyia
Korea and south-east Asia. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Xia Bu was the main
export materials in Sichuan Province. In 1915, on the San Francisco Pacific World
Expo, among all the attending countries, China won the most awards for craftsmanship, Xia Bu is one of them.
14 By 1920s and 1930s, Xia Bu cloth industry shrank
due to the rise of rayon.

Following the movement of sustainable lifestyle, Xia Bu gained its new life:
With easy transportation and communication, different Xia Bu regions are working
together closely than ever before. The regions along Chang Jiang River owe fibre
rich ramie sources, while Japan and Korea colleagues have good quality sense and
beauty eyes for ramie products. Different kinds of workshops, cooperation and trade
shows spring up like mushrooms (Photo 7).
5 Ramie Raw Fibre Preparation
After a ramie plant is cut down, the farmer will peeled its skin of the stalk while it is
still fresh. Depends on the region, the next step is either drying the peeled fibre in open
air or soaking it in water till it becomes soft. (For industry used ramie fibre, farmers
only dry them in the air and then sell the dry fibres to factories for de-gumming.)
