Conductive Fiber and Film
Spatial orientation of the semiconducting polymer networks over macroscopic
length scales has been demonstrated using the NÃ-LC template. High symmetry of
LC phase results in a large single domain of the templating state (Kang et al. 2004).
Along this line, semiconducting polymers are fabricated by the metathesis polymerization in an ordinary electro-optic LC cell. Polymerization of heptadiyne-based RM
in a LC solution with metal catalyst and chiral dopant provides the 1 μm thick
semiconducting poly(heptadiyne) bundle with a 10 μm spacing between adjacent
bundles (Fig. 15). After removal of the unreacted monomers, the formation of
uniform template domain of poly(heptadiyne) is ensured.
The anisotropically oriented LC networks based on oligo(ethylene oxide),
imidazolium, and pyridinium salt are successfully applied to the ion batteries and
conductive film. Since the structure and property relationships are critical for the
electro-optical devices, the design of ion-conductive RM should be firstly taken into
account (Kishimoto et al. 2003). Construction of supramolecular structures for ionic
channel is basically controlled by the intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen
bonding, π-π interaction, ionic interaction, and charge transfer interaction. For
example, imidazolium salt-based RMs are phase-separated and self-assembled to
construct the columnar packing structure. The ionic moieties are aggregated into the
inner part of columnar structure via the electrostatic interaction, and the LC groups
are arranged on the outer part. Ionic conductivities take place along the direction of
oriented column. Ionic conductivities parallel to the oriented direction are higher
than the perpendicular columnar axis. Furthermore, one-dimensional ion-conductive
polymer films are prepared by RM with ionic channel. Polymerization of selfassembled ionic channel is helpful to enhance the anisotropy in the solid polymer
networks.

events occurring after the photo-alignment and subsequent photopolymerization of RM with
dichroic dye in the LC film and macroscopic wrinkle formation are summarized. (Redrawn and
