5 Basket Weave—A basket weave resembles the plain weave
except that two or more warp yarns alternately interlace
with two or more weft yarns (unlike in plain weave where
only one yarn interlaces). A weave of two warp yarns
crossing two weft yarns is called a 2 × 2 basket. The arrangement of fibre need not be symmetrical; therefore, the
patterns of a basket weave may be 4 × 2, 4 × 4, etc. The
texture of a basket weave is somewhat flatter, and it is less
crimped than a plain weave due to interlace distance being
increased by two or more warp/weft yarns. It is stronger
than a plain weave, but it is less stable. The basket weave
pattern is shown in . Fig. 1.5b.
5 Twill Weave—In a twill weave, one or more warp yarns
alternately interlace over and under two or more weft yarns
in a repeated manner. This imparts a visual effect of a
straight or broken diagonal ‘rib’ to the fabric. This is the
most used fabric pattern for reinforcement in the composite
industry. It has good drape and more porosity than a plain
weave; therefore, its wettability by resin is good.
Comparatively, it is a little inferior in dimensional stability
than a plain weave. Due to the repetition of warp yarn after
long gaps (two or more weft yarns) , its crimp is less in
comparison to plain weave. Therefore, the appearance of
fabric is smoother with good mechanical properties. The
twill weave pattern is shown in . Fig. 1.5c.
5 Satin Weave—The satin weaves are similar to twill weaves,
but a number of interlaces of warp and weft are fewer. The
‘harness’ number is typically 4, 5, and 8. This denotes the
total number of yarns crossed and passed under before the
fibre repeats the pattern. A crow’s foot weave is a type of
satin weave that resembles a crow’s foot. Satin weaves are
very flat due to its long interlace distances and have good
