when a moving delivery system is used. The bend in the mandrel may
affect the composite product. In a stationary delivery system, the
whipping action of the mandrel must be avoided to maintain a good
quality of the composite product. Mounting the mandrel in a vertical
postion avoids this bending problem. All of the processability parameters applicable to filament winding technology are applied in this
technology. Polar wound CNG storage tanks are being used in automobiles, and these tanks are capable of taking 200–250 bar of pressure.
7.1.5 Automated Tape Winding Technology
5 Processing Technology—This process is similar to the filament
winding process except in this process, in place of filaments,
prepreg tape is used. The prepreg tape material is fed through an
automated tape application machine (robot). The prepreg tape is
wound over a mandrel in a specific designed pattern for helical
and hoop winding. Due to the thickness of the tape near a
non-geodesic path, winding is also possible using a tape winding
process. In a tape winding process, multiple layers of prepreg tape
also are applied to achieve the design thickness. The tape width
decides the winding patch. The thickness of the tape decides the
number of winding layers required. A cassette tape layer also has
been introduced, but this is not in widespread use. This method
was introduced to provide quick fabrication of composite part in
tape winding process. An example of an automated tape and
filament winding process is shown in . Fig. 7.7.
The tape laying process has emanated as an evolutionary—
not a revolutionary—process. In very large composite products, filament winding takes a very long time to fabricate the
product because the number of passes required to achieve the
required thickness is very high due to the small winding width

pressure experienced in rocket
motor casings are to the tune of
2000 °C and 1000 MPa, respectively.
