aids to enhance the recreational value of the beach further acts as a
buffer to dissipate high energy waves.
The primary advantage of this method is that it is more economical than
deploying huge defense structures . Nourishment can
broadly
be
classified as backshore nourishment , beach nourishment and shore face
nourishment.
2-Vegetation cover :
After the 2004 tsunami there was extensive study of the aftermath of
the tsunami and about various means to mitigate the effects of such
catastrophes . A common observation in such studies was that many
areas with thick vegetation at coast were not much affected by the
tsunami . This has lead to a suggestion of using trees and coastal
vegetation as a means to protect the coast. However ,there are views in
support and against this measure .
Based on studies and scientific results , the presence of vegetation in
coastal areas improve slope stability , consolidates sediment and
reduces wave energy
moving onshore ; therefore , it protects the
shoreline from erosion . Howevere , its site-specificity means that it may
be successful in estuaries (low energy environments) , but not on the
open coast (high enrgy environment) .
In some cases , vegetation cover fails because environmental conditions
do not favour the growth of species at the particular site
or there is
ignorance as to how to plant properly given the same conditions.
