Apply Legends Directly on Data
In formal written reports, readers have plenty of time to analyze graphs. In such
cases, legends can be totally separated from the data set (see first example below).
This is not such a bad thing for on-screen slide presentations either, especially if the
dataset is animated (see Sect. 6.10).
However, in slide presentations, it is easier for the audience to associate a specific data set with its meaning when the elements from the legend are displayed
right next to the data (see second example). This avoids back and forth search for
information.
Remember that it takes time for the audience to understand a graph. Give them
all the chances, introduce your information slowly and gradually. Take them by
the hand.
