Should You Use Sounds?
Typically, conference presentations do not include sounds. After all, it is the speaker
who is expected to provide the soundtrack!
One exception is when videos with sound are played. Unfortunately, many (if not
most) conference rooms are not setup to play sounds. As such, videos are likely to
be muted. Even when sounds can be heard, the volume might be too low, or only the
front rows might hear properly, causing frustrations.
If the soundtrack is very critical to you, be ready to generate the sounds yourself,
live in the microphone! (I have seen that once).
Sounds can also be used in other scenarios, as slide presentation software contains options to play sounds (in the animation tools). You could use sounds to introduce some features from your presentation or serve as additional clues related to
specific concepts. You could even ring a “bell” when moving up slides, just like on
old Disney tapes to remind kids to turn the page!
But quite frankly, I do not see much value in adding sounds, given the potential
technical problems and the extra work required to setup sounds in your
presentation.
But if you insist on including sounds, you will at least demonstrate some
originality!
