6 Fans and Flow Control Devices
6.3.3 Stoppings and Seals
This type of air control device is constructed to obstruct flow through a given section.
The most commonly used materials are wood, concrete blocks, polyurethane slabs
and so on, which are fit together to cover the entire gallery cross section (Fig. 6.33).

Stoppings can be temporary or permanent. Temporary stoppings are generally used in
the most active parts of the mine, where ventilation requirements change frequently.
Their airtightness is moderate, and the materials used in them are reusable.
Permanent stoppings are also called bulkheads
19 in metal mines and seals in coal
mines where a long-term airflow closure is required. This includes main intakes and
returns, belt entries, vent raises, booster fan zones, abandoned goafs and burning or
self-heating zones. These closures were made in the past with stonewalls filled with
sand from the workings, bricks and nowadays with concrete blocks, sprayed concrete
and metallic panels. Modern configurations of the later include man doors, louver
dampers and booster fan mounts.
6.3.4 Doors
These are devices are used for closing a gallery completely and also admit the passage
of the people and equipment. This system usually has a small sliding panel in the
middle or a shutter to facilitate flow regulation (regulating doors) (Fig. 6.34).
19 This term is also used for the walls engineered to retain water inside the mine workings.
