During COP also the day time discharge was found to be higher than the night
time discharge, the difference was not very high, as revealed from the hydrographs
for years 2000 to 2007 (Fig. 15). The difference in day and night time discharge is
maximum in Aug_II fortnight, which starts declining towards the close of the ablation season when diurnal discharge variation is also reduced considerably. This
could be ascribed to the fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of the glacier leading
to reduced ablation as well as retention of surface melt.
5 Conclusion
The melt water characteristics of Hamtah glacier, falling in Chandra basin in Chenab
River catchment, was studied from 2000 to 2007. Highest and lowest daily discharge of 0.710 × 10

and 0.044 × 10

were recorded on 3 August 2005 and 28
September 2006, respectively. During the common observation fortnights, the
