83
capacity building programs. So far, the Task Force has conducted more than 270
capacity building programs benefitting more than 10,700 farmers and 10 Self-help
Groups (SHGs) all over the Himalaya.
6 Conclusion
For enabling integrated agricultural development, an inclusive approach of integrated mountain development is required across the Indian Himalayan Region
(IHR) that warrants jhum re-development, micro-watershed based farming systems,
amelioration of acidic soils, micro rainwater harvesting structure, strengthening irrigation facilities, promoting organic agriculture, conservation agriculture, access to
climate resilient crop varieties, profitable integrated farming system (IFS) models
and also documentation and validation of the traditional knowledge system (TKS)
of the local communities to enable and ensure climate resilient agriculture in the
IHR. The technologies and interventions mentioned in Table 1 will not only help in
enabling sustainable and climate resilient agriculture in the hilly and mountainous
regions of India, but also help in preventing human migration and unemployment
and address food insecurity in the region.

Box 1: Task Force on Himalayan Agriculture under the National
Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE)
NMSHE came into existence in 2008 as one of the 8 integrated missions of
National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) to check the health and
status of the Himalayan ecosystem “to deliver better understanding of the
coupling between the Himalayan ecosystem and the climate factors and provide inputs for sustainable Himalayan development while addressing the protection of the fragile ecosystem”. The Task Force on Himalayan agriculture
under NMSHE program is aimed to assess the Himalayan agriculture vulnerability; to recognize critical vulnerabilities of the low-input agricultural ecosystem of Indian Himalayan region and to identify appropriate measures for
the farming communities of the Himalaya.
