TNT contact detonation, the seismic performance of the C-12 column decreases
by 34% compared with that of C-11 column only decreases by 2%, indicating that
the seismic performance of the post-blast column is significantly influenced by the
loading direction. However, it should be noted that during the earthquake, the seismic
loading direction is random, and thus the worst scenario should be considered for
the seismic design of structural members. Hence, it is suggested that the strengthening for the post-blast column should be made, e.g., welding steel reinforcement
of the cratering region, fiber reinforced polymer retrofitting, to improve the residual
seismic performance of the column after blast event.
12.6 Summary
In this chapter, the residual seismic resistance of UHPCC-FST specimen after contact
explosion is studied experimentally. Six 1/4 scaled circular UHPCC-FST were fabricated, and four of which were tested under contact explosion with the TNT charge
weights were 1–3 kg. Then, the low-frequency cyclic loading test was conducted to
quantitatively examine their residual seismic resistance (RSR) in terms of the lateral
load-carrying capacity, stiffness and energy consumption. The main conclusions can
be drawn as follows:
(1) The field contact detonation test shows that the present UHPCC-FST specimen
exhibits the localized damage with no overall response. With the increase of
the charge weight, the dimension of the blast induced crater enlarges, resulting
in more severe damage of specimen.
(2) Under the lateral cyclic loading, each specimen exhibits the bending failure. For
the intact specimen, the bending failure is occurred near the bottom of column,
