body temperature. The staple is initially deformed in the martensitic phase. For the
complete distraction, the staple is kept in sterilized iced saline at 0–4 °C. Staple was
then placed in a fractured region of the body immediately after removing it from
the iced saline. For the retention of the original shape of the staple, a warm saline
compress is then used. After getting the body temperature, it was found that the
fragments were compressed due to the shape change (Fig. 10). It was also reported
that the staple does not cause any symptoms after seven months.
Figure 11 shows the SMA nitinol plate which was used in mandible fracture
treatment to join bones and to reduce the recovery time [15]. The unique features
of SMA allow them to extend their application in physiotherapy. SMA gloves with
the use of wires in correspondence of the fingers are used for promoting the hand
movements by means of heating and cooling the gloves. It further contracts and
expands the wire which in turn closes and opens the hand.
Flexibility and recovery of original shape have extended the applications of shape
memory surgical instruments. For the removal of bile duct, kidney and bladder stones,
SMA basket has been created [18]. The principle of insertion of this basket is similar
to that of the Simon filter. With the application of heat, SMA basket tends to open as
