other aspects of mechanics are as follows: the first (1820) to solve the fourthorder partial differential equation of simply supported rectangular plate with
double trigonometric series; the introduction of mechanical work in engineering to measure the efficiency of the machine. In engineering, he changed
the tradition of designing and building suspension bridge by experience
alone, and adopted theoretical calculation in design. His scientific papers were
published in various French scientific journals. Papers on the basic equations
of fluid mechanics were published in Vol. 19 (1821) of the Journal of Chemistry. Papers on the equations of equilibrium and motion of elastic solids were
published in the Research Report of the French Academy of Sciences, Vol. 7
(1827) (Fig. 8.15).
8.16 Cauchy (1789–1857)
Cauchy (1789–1857) was a French mathematician, physicist, and
astronomer, whose greatest contribution in mathematics was that he introduced the concept of limit into calculus and established a logical and clear
analysis system based on limit. This is the essence of the history of calculus
and Cauchy’s great contribution to the development of human science.
In 1821, Cauchy put forward the method of limit definition and used
