that produced lift. This shows that people at that time did not know enough
about the gravity of the object when it left the ground. They thought that
the bird, like human imagination, had little or no gravity as long as it left
the ground, so it floated. However, the look of Chang E has a feeling of
wind. When the wind blows through the clothes, the belt floats up due to
the air resistance. This indicates that people have realized the existence of air
resistance when the air bypasses the human body. Therefore, when people’s
understanding of gravity was still very vague, they did not know that objects
will still be affected by gravity when they rose into the air. The flying legends
at that time were full of mystery and romance. Chang E did not rely on
the instruments that generate lift, just rising from the wind to the sky like
weightlessness. Such a scenario can only occur in space.
There is also the legend in ancient Greek mythology, Cupid Archery (as
shown in Fig. 7.3). Through the observation of bird flight, the ancient Greeks
realized the importance of the wing flapping on the flight, so they added a
pair of small wings to Cupid. However, such wings still seem to be incapable
of such weight, and these wings have become a symbolic symbol. Therefore,
the ancient Greeks’ perception of weight is far from sufficient.
