put PHOENICS software into the market, creating a precedent for CFD
commercial software market. With the rapid development of computer
group, parallel algorithm, direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large eddy
simulation (LES) have been greatly promoted. A variety of commercial
general software for calculating heat transfer and flow problems have been
put into the market, such as PHOENICS (1981), FLUENT (1983), FIDAP
(1983), STAR-CD (1987), FLOW-3D (1991, now called CFX), etc. In addition to the finite element method adopted by FIDAP, the finite volume
method is used for other products. FIDAP later merged with FLUENT and
became a part of the FLUENT software family. In 1989, Professor Patankar,
the famous scholar, introduced a series of compact software to calculate the
flow, heat transfer, and combustion processes. At present, there are at least 50
kinds of commercial software for the flow and heat transfer problems around
the world, which play an important role in the application of CFD technology. The following describes the CFD commercial software widely used
in the world.
(1) CFX
The software adopts the finite volume method, the pieced structured
grid, and the non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate (body fitted coordinate) system for discretization. The layout of variables adopts the same
position grid method. The discrete schemes of convection terms include
first-order upwind, mixed scheme, QUICK, CONDIF, MUSCI, and
higher order upwind scheme. The coupling relationship between pressure and velocity is based on a simple algorithm, which includes line
iteration, algebraic multiple grids, ICCG, strong implicit method and
block implicit method (BIM). The software can calculate incompressible
and compressible flows, coupled heat transfer, multiphase flow, chemical
reaction, gas combustion, etc.
(2) FIDAP
FIDAP is the abbreviation of Fluid Dynamics Analysis Package, which
was launched by Fluid Dynamics International Inc. in 1983. It is the
first CFD software using finite element method (FEM) in the world. It
can accept the grid generated by famous grid generation software such as
I-DEAS, PATRAN, ANSYS, and ICEMCFD. The software can calculate
the flow problems of compressible and incompressible flow, laminar and
turbulent flows, single-phase and two-phase flows, Newtonian fluid and
non-Newtonian fluid.
