Fig. 2.105 The important role of aerodynamics in the development of modern
fighter aircraft
developed the first generation of supersonic fighter (MiG-15, F-86, etc.); in
the 1960s, the breakthrough of the problem of large swept wing and area law
aerodynamics led to the development of the second generation fighter, which
increased the aircraft speed to twice the sound speed (MiG-21, F-4, French
Mirage III, etc.); in the 1980s, the third generation fighters (Su-27, F-15,
etc.) were developed by the breakthrough of new aerodynamic technologies such as nonlinear lift technology and wing layout, which significantly
improved weapon performance, airborne equipment,and maneuverability;
after the 1990s, with the breakthrough of wing body integration design,
new materials, electronics, and other new technologies, the fourth-generation
fighter, represented by the U.S. F-22, has been developed, with stealth, supersonic cruise, over the horizon combat capability, high mobility, and agility.
It can be seen that in the development of fighter aircraft, in addition to
the application of propulsion technology, electronic technology, new material technology and stealth technology, and other high-tech achievements, the
aircraft presents a more serious challenge to aerodynamics. How to expand
the application range of angle of attack as much as possible, how to improve
the agility of the aircraft, how to achieve the minimum detectability while
meeting the flight performance, how to play the high efficiency of the propulsion system, etc. are all the problems that need to be solved in aerodynamics.
For this reason, NASA has listed aerodynamics as one of the key technologies in future research strategy in recent years. The goal of aerodynamics is to
develop new concepts, put forward physical understanding and theory, test,
and CFD calculation verification, and finally ensure the effective design and
safe operation of the aircraft.
In addition, from the perspective of the development trend of civil aircraft,
high-performance power devices and excellent aerodynamic characteristics
