The Somes , ul Cald dam & lake, is a buffer lake between the Tarnit , a and Gil˘ au
lakes; its functions are also important, namely:
– the production of electricity in the power plant located at the base of the dam;
– the recovery of water flows discharged from the Tarnit , a hydropower plant;
– silt decanter for Agârbiciu tributary; in fact, this feature has been one of the most
important reasoning in the design of this retention, just to mitigate the very high
silting level of Gil˘ au retention, situated immediately downstream;
– the mitigation of flash flood function is poorly represented, due to the reduced
dedicated characteristic volume.
The Gil˘ au dam & lake, although the smallest, has the complex function, which
derives from the purpose for which it was made:
– older source for water supply of the same important network of settlements and
economic units located in the downstream and neighbour areas: the municipality
of Cluj-Napoca and its industrial units, older C˘ apus , and Aghires , mining interest
regions, all the localities from Somes , ul Mic Corridor (includes the Gherla and Dej
cities), the neighbour S˘ alaj county, using the pumping stations;
– compensation role for the liquid flow pulsations discharged from the peak hydroelectric power plants, located in the upstream;
– the production of electricity in the power plant located at the base of the dam;
– the mitigation of flash flood function is poorly represented, due to the reduced
dedicated characteristic volume.
Some¸ sul Rece I dam & reservoir represent a collector of Iara basin derivation and
of Some¸ sul Rece river, with the water drainage to the Fântânele reservoir; even the
function of flash floods mitigation is, also, present, but limited by the low volume of
this retention.
Not devoid of importance is, also, the tourist function, beeing specific for all
areas around the reservoirs from the analyzed basin. This function is a complex
one in the case of Fântânele and Gil˘ au reservoirs (rest and recreation) and easy
(leisure) in the case of the other lakes. This situation, in the first case, is explained by
the possibilities of accommodation that they offer: the spaces around the Fântânele
reservoir by comfortable hotels with a total capacity of 365 places, restaurants and
bars and the spaces around the Gil˘ au reservoir by the motel located on the left bank,
equipped with an accommodation capacity of 114 places, restaurant and bar [55].
The dams with reservoirs from the Upper basin of Cris , ul Repede river. The
Dr˘ agan-Iada hydropower improvement has been made in order to capitalize in a superior way the water resources available in Dr˘ agan, Iada and S˘ acuieu rivers (Fig. 16.14).
In order to satisfy the needs of industrial and irrigation water in Oradea municipality area, it was found necessary to stabilize the liquid flow of Cri¸ sul Repede river,
by carrying in its basin of one or several reservoirs with a useful volume of water of
28 million m
3 .
After analysing many location sites, has come to the conclusion that the optimal
solution for the first stage was the onstruction of the Les , u reservoir on the Iada river
[30].
