Fig. 16.7 The permeability of the rocks in the Apuseni Mountains. The petrographic mosaic, in
the upper right side (adapted after Geologic map of Romania, scale 1:200000—Cluj & Brad sheets,
1968)
Generally, areas with high permeability correspond to the main valley corridors,
depression basins or torrential basins in the higher area, characterized by the presence of quaternary pebbles and sands in thick packs, or by the presence of sandy
petrographic structures.
On the opposite end, there are granite plateaus, crystalline massifs and clay basin
areas, which due to the specificity of the rocks can’t accumulate underground water.
In the collector basins (Mure¸ s), the relatively high permeability of the rocks is
identified in the middle basin of Arie¸ s river. Also, similar features can be found in
an area characterized by the presence of sedimentary formations mosaic with noncohesive rocks, in the lower basin of the Iara river. Similar behaviour is found also
on a diverse sedimentary substrate in the corridor of the Ampoi River but also in the
valleys of the Mure¸ s right tributaries between the Vin¸ tu de Jos and Mintia villages
(Fig. 16.7).
