it gathers information on the nature of the terrain, giving concrete details of the
morphological features of the relief; on the other hand, it sees the changes processes
due to natural and anthropogenic phenomena. The adopted hydraulic model had
designed considering the flow and water level, various flood scenarios.
8.1.2 Assessing the Suitability of Economic Activities
Towards a Multipurpose Polder
The almost complete embankment of the Danube Floodplain with non-submersible
dykes affected both the hydro geomorphological system and the local and regional
topo-climates, a phenomenon accentuated by the global changes. In this context, a
socio-economic study was carried out for the assessment of the economic activities
within Danube’s floodplain. Along with the activities defined in first objective, a
program of ecological and economic assessment was required in the polders of the
Danube’s floodplain.
The objective of this study was the deep and coherent scientific substantiation of
the sustainable development, which offered the idea of alternative technical solutions
for the sustainable use of the polders within the Danube’s floodplain. The transformation of the Danube floodplain ecosystems into terrestrial ecosystems has reduced
their functions (ecological, economic, recreational aesthetic and educational), which
has had a major impact on the natural capital. To restore the balance of this socioecological complex, renaturing activities are required in the degraded polders. Some
criteria for carrying out the pre-feasibility study on renaturing the polders were necessary. Therefore, thematic studies were done and their outputs have deliniated the
renatured areas that were to be included in the national network of protected areas.
The national ecological network is created in order to preserve the natural genetic
diversity of the species present in ecosystems and natural complexes, as well as to
ensure productive living conditions and to achieve sustainable development on the
respective territories [69–73].
8.2 Materials and Methods
The expected results are based on the materials and methods used for the “Ecological
and Economical Resizing of Danube’s Floodplain in Lower sector” project. These
are briefly detailed by the flowchart described in Fig. 8.2.
