5 Water Supply Challenges and Achievements in Constanta County
195
i. The use of trenchless technologies and responsible working team, in specially
protected areas.
j. The prevention of groundwater pollution by avoiding its use as an irrigation
water source, even if for small isolated areas.
k. The use of highly efficient and, if possible, variable speed pumps, to renew the
existing irrigation and drainage pumping stations.
l. The assessment of the specific energy consumption coefficient before a pumping
station is put into operation and the introduction of a coherent system to compare
it.
m. New investments in pressure control and automation equipment are needed to
modernise the existing pumping stations.
n. The continuous assessment of the water supply systems performance has to be
conducted to keep the yield into a high range all over the region.
o. Investments in new technologies appropriate for our region, such as solar energy
driven equipment and seawater desalinisation, have to be considered on longterm in the future.
p. A sound programme for either initial or continuous education of the personnel involved in engineering design, construction and exploitation of the water
systems.
