5 Water Supply Challenges and Achievements in Constanta County

5.2.2 Urban and Rural Drinkable Water Supply
The distribution system, in Constanta County, consists of an assembly of local and
zonal systems. Due to an increasing demand for water in the Southern part of the
region, an old concept of interconnecting the zonal systems is going to be put into
operation. Therefore, the groundwater source from Medgidia is meant to supply not
only Medgidia but also additional cities including Mangalia and the Southern coast
resorts. The regional water supply system will take water from the above mentioned
good quality source, located in Medgidia, and convey it to almost all the localities
in the Southern coastal area, where the local sources do not fit the water demand or
drinkable properties. The proposed system is a resumption of a concept, namely the
interconnected seaside system that has been operating for a long time but which was
abandoned about 20 years ago. Local water sources were preferred instead, as they
were of good quality [21].
The current flow rate abstracted from the five wells in service at Medgidia source
is about 417 l/s, less than the current maximum flow rate that can be captured. The
test drilling indicates a very high capacity of the aquifer that can be safely exploited.
Constanta, the most important city in Dobrogea, with a population of over 284,000
inhabitants after the 2011 census, is the best example of urban water supply. The city
is part of the water supply system Constanta, comprising Constanta, Mamaia Resort,
and Palazu Mare. They have five groundwater sources, namely Caragea Dermen,
Cismea I, Cismea II, Constanta Nord, and Medgidia, located in the underground
cross-border water body RODL06, Fig. 5.2, and a surface source, Galesu Intake.
Caragea Dermen Source consists of 16 wells, with the depth between 35 and 90 m.
It has an installed capacity of 2578 m
3 /h. The wells are equipped with electric pumps,
with flow The specific consumed energy coefficierates between 90 and 504 m
3 /h,
and pumping heads of 70 mwc.
This is the oldest of the groundwater sources of Constanta, its first wells being
drilled in 1915. The abstracted water is chlorinated and conveyed to the storage and
pumping facility Calarasi (situated in Constanta city), to supply part of Constanta
city. Other ducts take water to the Ovidiu town, close to the source.
The Source Cismea is composed of three abstracting groups, located in the North
of Constanta. The source has a total capacity of 8497 m
3 /h. Water is pumped from 50
to 120 m deep wells, the head varying between 79 and 82 mwc. The water abstracted
from this source is pumped to the storage complex Palas [22].
The Constanta North Source is located in the Northern zone of Constanta city,
along the southern shore of Lake Siutghiol. It consists of 5 wells drilled at a depth
of 300 m, except for one well, drilled at a depth of only 65 m. The capacity is of
2218 m
3 /h [8].
The wells are equipped with submersible electric pumps, with flow rates between
299 and 612 m
3 /h and pumping heads ranging between 30 and 90 mwc [23].
The abstracted water is pumped to the Constanta North storage and pumping
facility.
