Introduction to “Water Resources
Management in Romania”

Abstract This chapter presents the main features of the book titled “Water
Resources Management in Romania”. The book consisted of 7 parts including the
introduction (this chapter) and the conclusions (the closing chapter). The main body
of the book consists of five themes to cover the water quality, the water supply, the
antropic influences to water resources, hydrology and several case studies. The main
technical elements of each chapter are presented under its relevant theme.

1.1 Romania: A Brief Background
Figure 1.1 shows the main features of Romania country that are associated with the
contents of the book. Romania benefits from different types of aquatic units including
rivers, lakes, underground waters, marine waters. The particular hydrographic and
hydrological characteristics of Romania, determined mainly by the geographic position of the country in the temperate-continental climate and by the presence of the
Carpathian Mountain arch condition the spatial and temporal distribution of water
resources.
