among others. The problem with these indicators is their unavailability for the
whole coastal municipalities of the country.
On the other hand, predicting the future value of sensitivity indicators (as is done
for temperature and rainfall with global circulation models) is also complicated, but
consulting, for example, future regional projects and development plans can give us
a hint of the direction towards which development is heading, and help us predict
social and ecological implications.
This situation is alarming because it shows that, as a coastal country, much has
to be implemented in the near future to protect the coastal inhabitants and infrastructure in Mexico. Also, Mexico has to change its coastal policies to promote a
type of coastal development model that decreases the coastal vulnerability of the
municipalities and that takes into account the potential impacts of a shift towards
dryness of this complex coastal socio-ecological system.
Acknowledgments The present research is part of the characterization and regionalization of the
coastal zones of Mexico that includes methods of Geographic Information Systems and biophysical and socioeconomic statistics in current conditions and with climate change project of the 2013–
2016 Collaborative Platform on Climate Change and Green Growth between Canada and Mexico.
