The Biosphere Reserve of Mapimí (BRM) was initially decreed in 1977 as an
UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Reserve founded to protect the environment and to rescue the Bolsón Tortoise from extinction (Halffter 1978; Kaus 1992).
Since their origins, biosphere reserves are expected to promote conservation,
