imply a disruption of the landscape and the socio-ecological system at different
levels.
However, there are aspects that cannot be technically or scientifically evaluated
(Martínez 2006). Therefore, decisions on the transformation of the landscape (functional, esthetic, and symbolic changes) cannot be taken in the margin of the communities that historically have shaped the existing socio-ecological system. In this
sense, intercultural communication can provide tools for better representation in
decision-making.
In short, we propose an articulation of two analytical components for the study
of drylands, landscape, and socio-ecological systems, to gain a greater understanding of the complexity of these systems and the transformation processes that they
undergo. Thus, this work is a preliminary approach of a more extensive research.
Then, we identify the need to develop further research that analyzes these issues in
greater depth and exposes the impacts that occur at different scales and, mainly,
highlights the biological and cultural loss triggered by the so-called modernizing
processes.
Finally, the interest of this chapter is to outline some of the needs of a research
agenda that crosses different spheres of knowledge, and integrates their components
in an analysis of the consequences facing the transformation of drylands and the
alterations they generate in the landscape and the socio-ecological system. Despite
the discourses in favor of modernization that does not necessarily mean improvement for the inhabitants of the impacted areas, the main issue here is to focus on
changes which can be irreversible in the ecosystem and its cultural components.
