sector. The objective of this paper is twofold: one is to bring forth the solid waste
management model followed in Hunsur, which can be adopted by other municipalities
and the other is to assess the effectiveness of schemes and projects which drive on
competition to achieve a target.
2 Data and Case Study
Hunsur is a City Municipal Council located at 12.43°N 76.40°E in Mysore District in
Karnataka. The town has a population of about 56,053 (2017) across 31 wards. It has a
total area of 11.76 km
2 . Hunsur Town Municipal Council has total administration over
12,971 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water supply and sewerage
system. The town generates about 22 tonnes per day of municipal waste of which,
approximately 16.5 tonnes are collected. At present, its collection efficiency is 75%.
Hunsur CMC spent around 267 lakhs for the operation and maintenance of solid
waste management systems and generated revenue of about 27 lakhs (Fig. 1).
Hunsur City secured the “Best City for Solid Waste Management in the south
zone” award in Swachh Survekshan 2018. With the available resources in hand, Hunsur CMC was able to efficiently manage waste zone-wise using a system of human
and machine, monitored continuously IEC. They also involved all the stakeholders
