5 Land Use
In ANU campus, at present land use pattern is shown in Fig. 2. The total area of
the campus is 1,375,733 m
2 , out of this, buildings were constructed in 264,468 m
2
(19.22%), Plantation grown in 819,094 m
2 (59.53%) and open land including play
ground are present in occupied 292,221 m
2 (21.24%).
Environmental management of the ANU campus is addressed under the following
heads.
(a) Air pollution
As the ANU campus besides NH-5, pollutant release from vehicles greatly influenced
the air quality. From two wheelers to heavy vehicles with different goods moving
continuously round the clock. The pollutants that release from various vehicles are
hydrocarbons (HC), CO, NO x particulate matter, SO x and VOCs. Pundir (1994)
presented various health effects from automobile emissions. Mathew (2014) had
given various measures to mitigate automobile pollution. From these studies, it can
be understood that the vehicles are emitting dangerous poisonous pollutants into the
atmosphere of the ANU campus.
Plantation
At present, plantation covers 59.537% of the ANU campus. To reduce the impact
of automobile pollution, plants like a spider plant, snake plant, bamboo palm, neem
tree and aloe vera shall be planted. For details refer https://wiki.nurserylive.com.
