Ying Gao is undertaking her Ph.D. degree at at Institute of
Pharmaceutical Biology and Biotechnology in Heinrich
Heine University Düsseldorf under the guidance of Prof.
Peter Proksch and Prof. Rainer Kalscheuer. Her work
involves investigation of bioactive natural products from
endophytic fungi. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Materia Medica in 2007 and a Master’s degree in
Pharmaceutics in 2010 from Beijing University of Chinese
Medicine, China. Before she moved to Germany and started
her Ph.D. studies, she worked as a pharmacist and research
assistant at Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She has experience in the isolation and structural elucidation of natural products, biological activity investigation,
and structure–activity relationship studies. Her main interests
lie in the discovery of new bioactive compounds from endophytic fungi associated with traditional Chinese medicinal
plants.
Peter Proksch was born in 1953 in Leipzig (Germany). He
received his Ph.D. degree in Biology in 1980 from the
University of Cologne. From 1980 to 1982 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Irvine (USA).
From 1982 to 1985 he was at the University of Cologne and
from 1986 to 1990 at the University of Braunschweig where
he received his venia legendi for Pharmaceutical Biology. In
1990 he became Professor of Pharmaceutical Biology at the
University of Würzburg and in 1999 he moved to the University of Düsseldorf where he was Head of the Institute of
Pharmaceutical Biology and Biotechnology until 2019. His
fields of research are bioactive natural products from marine
macro- and microorganisms and from endophytic fungi. He
has authored or coauthored over 600 publications and holds
honorary or visiting professorships at the Universities of
Beijing, Qingdao, and Yichang as well as the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences at Haikou. In 2016 he
received the Friendship Award of the People’s Republic of
China, which is the highest award given to foreigners and in
2017 he received a honorary doctorate degree from the
University of Abuja in Nigeria.
