Since dead cells did not fluoresce, these findings indicate that VBNC cells retain their viability. When
Vibrio harveyi and V. fischeri were induced into the VBNC state by nutrient limitation, both lost the
capacity of luminesce but luminescence was restored when nutrient limitation was relieved by the
addition of nutrients (103).
