Chapter 5
Procedure for Using the Microcosm
N-System
Ken-ichi Shibata, Kunihiko Kakazu, Kakeru Ruike,
and Kazuhito Murakami
Abstract In this chapter, the measured biomass, amount of production and consumption, an endpoint, and a reference point for ecosystem risk assessment for the
microcosm are presented.
5.1 Work Flow for the Microcosm N-System
The work flow for the impact assessment using the experimental microcosm is as
follows:
1. Preparations of the microcosm, test materials, metering equipment, and culture
apparatus
2. Initiation of the microcosm culture
3. Initiation of DO measurements (0 or 15 days after initiation of microcosm
cultivation)
4. Addition of the analyte
5. End of cultivation and measurement (14 days after the analyte was added to the
microcosm)
