Until essential utility enters into the equations, like a pH of 7 for pure drinking
water, or breathable air, we are nowhere near the zero-locus-theorem. But as we
approach the end of Pi, for example, the ecological equivalents take on terrifying,
ethical, and real-time concern. Examples: The Argentine Base Esperanza, on
Antarctica’s Western Peninsula, containing the world’s largest Adélie Penguin colonies, hit a record 65 degrees in the Antarctic Summer of 2020. Penguins don’t do
well in temperatures exceeding 46 degrees. Corresponding to such heating trends
discernible in the past half-century, “87 percent of glaciers” in that western region
“have retreated”

. In 2019, at least 100 elephants died from drought in Botswana’s
Chobe National Park, with no meaningful attempts by authorities to try and save the
animals

. Just four months later, Botswana officials auctioned off permits for hunters to kill another 70 elephants allegedly to reduce the conflict with farmers and
discourage poaching. You kill in order to prevent killing
