so arbitrary, at every point, number, and fraction along its course, that a perfect
metaphor arises graphically. It signals the transcendent incorporeality of all knowledge and its proposed targets. These incommensurable associations form no ascertainable structure that can be analyzed to closure. The picture is forever being
rendered increasingly intangible, beyond all borders of interpolation.
Imagine that which cannot be imagined. Plato, Mahavira, Lao Tzu, Spinoza, and
Beethoven had no problem doing so. It is more than a word or numbers game, as
Wittgenstein concluded in his manuscript, On Certainty (OC1..OC676, 1969). It
suggests instead a distribution in no particular proportion of known and unknown
deaths: a realm where all numbers are without the slightest relevance, like their
makers. Where no thought can get in or out. A black hole of abstractions, suppositions, causes, and effects for which inconsequence is the most pervasive affirmation.
Nullity may well be complicated by something, anything, that exists, somewhere
within the crystalline structureless domain. That something is not subject to knowledge. No one will ever name it. There are no antecedents, no designates. It lives, it
dies, both, without targeted representation.
Indeed, there is a third thing, neither life nor death which it embodies, through
the very action of embodiment. A fiction nurtured by the truth of its fiction.
And so one goes on and on, wondering what is possible, and, by what means,
regulated or undiscovered, yet, the human connection to all other life forms allows
for the slightest definition or testament. Our self-imposed crisis is the original
ecological paradox. The ongoing tragedy may only be repealed upon that heroism
of daily life which seeks first contact with the Other: biosemiotic liberation
(Fig. 89.2).
