83.3 The Ideal of an Alternative?
God touching Adam atop the Sistine Chapel, represents a bias that is encrypted with
every communication, hundreds of billions of times per human day, and has absolutely undermined the possibility of escape from that system of ideas which marks
the most endemic human characteristic: idealism. As against an Anthropocene suggesting that we are radically condemned to this infernal cycle, our revolutions mere
blips on the ongoing, rapid devolution which is mounting a silent quarantine on any
prospect for human aftermaths. The more circumscribed our future years, the more
obscure our self-isolations, as they move on a trajectory toward the final whispers of
our presence in this collective form. Our accumulating exile has no kingdom, no
lightning rod. Where is it located?
Do answers to our short-lived biological sovereignty gather at a particular cemetery? Is there any final message commensurate with so hysterical and perplexing a
roman candle? No one will ever declare what it is, this experiment with man and
woman, offspring and their mean life expectancies. The total demographic experience appears to be a blunder. All of the philosophical ideals stemming from the tens
of billions of humans who have been born, then vanished, is a mental category, little
ruminated upon, as useful as the inanimate zero which—to great but subtle effect—
proffers a layering of caesuras. Binary equations presume to understand the function of a zero, just as the Edo School and shan-shui landscape traditions of East Asia
endeavored to make much of emptiness, as earlier discussed (Fig. 83.1).
83.4 Unlike Nothingness
But unlike nothingness the empty provocation leaves a bewildering poetic teeming
with suggestion. Everything within emptiness invites an interesting cross between
the Sorites and Russell’s Paradoxes. And from that plateau, the lopsided world, its
infinity of crucial imbalances, may, we say, harbor something profound. And thus,
our earlier discussions of transitional evolution and of hope.
Whereas all of the critically basic resources that humanity has taken for granted
are fast dwindling, every eco-dynamic calculation pertaining to the rate of species
