Chapter 73
Metaphorical Realities
73.1 The Unclouded Mirror
All of the foregoing has seemed to have collided with some intractability as outlined
in the boundary layers of more than four billion years of ecological dynamism that
has led to a humanity incapable of releasing its grip upon the world, its humanpropelled fast-track toward implosion. That collision equates with the metaphors
dogging our reasoning faculties, the obvious cancer so often intoned by our kind in
referencing that repugnant vestige of violence dominating the collective power and
broken promises of this venomous hominin. Of course, the normal defensive posture is to declaim such language as misanthropic or, worse, to declare it useless, if
its aim is to drill into the mind of the cynical reader a helplessness rendered intellectually vacuous by some genetic dictatorship we have implemented, notwithstanding joy, Mozart, Rembrandt, and chocolate. The too obvious point is that this
cynicism is precisely our collective response, when all the erratic behavior is calculated with respect to our species’ heated reactions to the earth underfoot. Our goal
by way of this treatise is to nullify the comfort taken in this illusory refuge and, of
course, to zero in on what it will take to successfully combat such behavior, all those
metaphorical realities of destruction, with an existential truth that places such metaphors before the unclouded mirror. And what reads of an anti-social treadmill
obliges greater callings in due course (Fig. 73.1).
As we lend added commentary to the ages of self-deprecation, we have reason to
add that this representative of ideas, this human species, is only that, an idea, certainly no ideal, with its tangle of morgues and self-interested denial. More recently,
of appeals to an economy not convulsed by the constant parsing of corporate earnings, but which strives to enshrine and enliven “Sustainability Credits”
