policies, strategies, and planning (UN, 2015). Goal 16 includes justice for all;
one aspect of environmental justice is to have good air quality for all people.
Goal 16.3 is to promote the rule of law and ensure access to justice. Goal
16.6 is to develop effective, accountable, and transparent institutions (UN,
2015). Goal 17 addresses implementation; one of the goals of this book is to
address a number of sustainable development issues that will be beneficial
to readers who are working on sustainable energy, electrification of transportation, modernization of the electrical grid, and improvement of air quality,
which are important aspects for those involved in the global partnership for
sustainable development.
The Sustainable Development Goals are for the time period from January
1, 2016 to 2030, with the hope that all people and nations will prosper and
participate. Those involved in adopting these goals recognize that “climate
change is one of the greatest challenges of our time” and that “sustainable
urban development and management are crucial to the quality of life of
people” (UN, 2015).
1.8 Linkage Between Reducing Greenhouse Gases
and Improving Air Quality
Since climate-changing combustion of fossil fuels produces both greenhouse
gases and other emissions that impact air quality, it is logical to address both
climate change and air quality together. Policy decisions should consider
the collective impacts on greenhouse gas emissions, climate change, and air
quality (Melamed et al., 2016). The Paris Agreement on Climate Change has
a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions; however, those working to
implement policies to reduce emissions can also take into account the impact
of their actions on urban air quality and the Sustainable Development Goals.
1.9 Ecological Sustainable Development
The importance of including social, environmental, and economic (triple
bottom line) concerns in decision making will be considered in this book,
because it is beneficial to consider health and well- being as well as ecological
integrity in making decisions (Lederwasch and Mukheibir, 2013). Both
the long- term and short- term impacts of decisions are important because
new vehicles, power plants, and buildings often have long lives. Efforts to
improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions will need to be
continued over multiple generations.
