property in the Province of Misiones showed 6 m of height and 34 cm diameter in
average (María Eugenia Barrandeguy, pers. comm.).
In the already cited experience of Valle Morado (Province of Salta), also A. colubrina var. cebil was planted. Between years 2001 and 2002, a restoration trial was
installed using 15 timber species from the Selva Pedemontana of the Yungas. The
mixed plantation included the species with 32 individuals per ha, which reached at
sixth year an average DBH of 11.6 cm and a total height of 7.1 m (Balducci
et al. 2009).
Although A. colubrina var. cebil is not among the most valuable timber species,
its potential is increasing as a substitute for hardwood species from Chaco and Selva
Pedemontana (Eliano et al. 2009). Its wood has a specific weight of 0.980 g/cm
3
(Tortorelli 2009). Accordingly, it was classified as a promising wood species owing
to its economic value (with valuable wood production), acceptable silviculture performance, and aptitude for artificial regeneration programs (Carvalho 1998).
In Argentina, the species shows great exploitation in the Northwest of the country. According to the official statistics, 12,567 tons were harvested there in 2017
(SGAyDS 2019). However, there are extraction data in the Northeast of Argentina
for the year 1946 from both fiscal lands and private plantations (967 tons) (Tortorelli
2009), reflecting that it was also a lumber resource there in a recent past.
Nevertheless, so far there is not any domestication program in course for the species, which in addition is not specifically protected under any regulation (Richter
and Dallwitz 2000) and is categorized as “least concern” with low risk of extinction
by the IUCN (2012).
16.5 Breeding and Conservation Programs: Future Steps
The three species considered in this chapter show different degrees of progress in
terms of breeding strategy and domestication studies. Handroanthus impetiginosus
is perhaps the most advanced of the three species in studies on intra- and interpopulation genetic diversity, selection of plus trees, agamic propagation, and creation of propagation materials. The genetic variability patterns of H. impetiginosus
in the Argentinean Yungas Rainforest is an important input to guide domestication,
breeding, and conservation efforts. However, it is very necessary in the near future
to intensify sampling in populations currently represented by less than 20 trees in
order to make populations more comparable, as well as increase the number of
molecular markers for a better characterization. On the other hand, the CSO currently installed in Famaillá Experimental Station needs the backing of a network of
progeny and provenances trials, which will be done at the time that it begins to
produce seeds. A similar stage has been reached for Cordia trichotoma, with the two
CSO installed. However, work on molecular characterization of populations is only
just beginning in this species. On the other hand, in both species, it is also necessary
to know the responses to abiotic stresses like low temperature and drought.
