13.1 The Genus Cedrela in Argentina: Distribution Area,
Ecological Niches, and the Current State of Its
Genetic Resources
Cedrela (Meliaceae) is distributed in Central and South America, from Mexico (24°
N) to Argentina (28° S). This genus includes tropical and subtropical highly valuable species for the domestic and international forestry sector (Kageyama et al.
2004; Pennington and Muellner 2010). In Argentina, Cedrela occurs in the
Tucumano-Oranense Rainforest or Yungas Rainforest (Yungas hereafter), in the
Northwestern Argentina (NWA), and in the Paraná Atlantic Forest also known as
Paranaense Rainforest or Alto Paraná Rainforest (name used hereafter), located in
Northeastern Argentina (NEA) (Fig. 13.1; also see Chap. 12).
In the Yungas of NWA, four altitudinal strata are distinguished, three of which
host forest species: (i) Temperate Montane Forest (TMF), (ii) Montane Rainforest
