4.7 Concluding Remarks
Nothofagus obliqua wood is already positioned in the timber market in Chile, but in
Argentina it has a more local market, mostly restricted to the surroundings of San
Martín de los Andes city, where the Forest Department of Lanín National Park
makes a sustainable use of its forests. The official statistics report a production of
1624 m
3
of roble pellín timber in 2017 in Argentina, 65% originated within National
Park jurisdiction (SGAyDS 2019). The knowledge generated for its domestication
and improvement encourages its positioning as a breeding option aiming at diversifying forest production in Argentinean Patagonian region, which nowadays is
focused in introduced fast-growing species such as ponderosa pine and Douglas fir.
Within the current political scenario, with national laws promoting native species
cultivation in Argentina, provincial states should deepen the implementation of
instruments to support foresters. We hope cultivation of roble pellín will be installed
in the region, generating a new productive alternative, offering high wood quality
and indirectly contributing to the persistence of their beautiful natural forests.
