It is an infection tolerated and sometimes even promoted by the same corn producers of the Central-South region of Mexico, since it is consumed and sold in
regional markets and canned by some food companies. Its sale represents a significant economic income, as its price far exceeds the price of corn grain (Villanueva
1997). Work has been done to implement the crop; several methods of inoculation
have been used, including sprinkling, injecting, and spraying spores; the method
that has given the best results for the production of galls is by injection of haploid
mycelium generated by fusion of opposite mating type (heterothallic) (Valverde
et al. 1995).
