About the Authors
Jayanti A. Sachdev, PE received two degrees from
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University:
a BS in biology (completed in 3 years) and an MS in
environmental sciences and engineering. During
her education, Sachdev held an internship at the
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Reston, Virginia.
Her contributions at USGS included surface water
and associated biological tissue analysis in support
of studying the effect of pesticides on endocrine
systems, research on the impacts of various groundwater sampling and analysis technologies to determine the effects on detected metal concentrations,
and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency STORET (Storage and Retrieval) water
quality database work. After graduating, Sachdev worked in the private sector and
was responsible for quantification of environmental contamination at sites contaminated by past releases of various chemicals and associated risk evaluation and
analysis of remediation technology applications as well as environmental database
management programming.
Subsequent contributions over the past 12 yearshave included project and program management as well as technical work in the areas of site investigations and
remediation, air quality compliance, greenhouse gas and climate change, industrial
wastewater engineering, and pollution prevention.
Specifically, Sachdev managed and conducted technical work under various
federal- and state-level programs to evaluate and remediate sites contaminated
by past releases of various chemicals with the ultimate goal of the protection of
human health and the environment under various potential current or future land
uses. The driver behind the environmental contamination assessments as well as
the ultimate associated remediation of various environmental media (groundwater,
surface water/sediment, soil) was based on both human health and ecological risk
evaluations. Close regulatory (both federal and state level) and local community-level
collaboration was required on these projects.
Sachdev managed and conducted technical work associated with air emissions
inventorying, air permitting, and greenhouse gas and climate change services for
various clients in support of the ultimate goal of reducing emissions into the environment and promoting overall sustainable practices. An example of one of Sachdev’s
projects was to conduct an evaluation and recommend options for reducing emissions in company operations, including hazardous waste minimization opportunities,
material substitution options, process control options, and add-on control options.
She was also responsible for environmental data collection and associated analysis
to assist power plant utilities in evaluating potential toxics issues in plant-generated
process wastewater.
More recently, Sachdev worked with Higgins to set up a program for the state of
Sao Paulo, Brazil, to reduce the impacts of toxic chemicals.
