Trace Elements in Abiotic and Biotic Environments
Though Ag nanoparticles are often used in many medical procedures and devices,
as well as in various biological fields, they have their drawbacks due to nanotoxicity.
However, the downside of AgNPs is that they can induce toxicity at various degrees.
Higher concentrations of AgNPs are toxic and can cause various health problems.
There are also studies that prove that nanoparticles of Ag can induce various ecological problems and disturb the ecosystem if released into the environment (Prabhu
and Poulose 2012). It is hypothesized that the toxic effects of nano-silver are due to
a combination of the specific properties of AgNPs and the generation of ions from
them (Wijnhoven et al. 2009).
