Cobalt [Co, 27]
with younger stocker being more sensitive, though it can occur in all ruminant animals
and does affect also goats and deer.
Tolerance of ruminants to Co is very high, and greatly in excess of the requirements.
Typical signs of chronic Co toxicity in most species are reduced feed intake and
body weight, emaciation, anemia, hyperchromasia, debility, and increased liver Co.
Signs of chronic Co toxicity are similar, in many respects, to its deficiency. Feeding
supplemental Co compounds, under assessment up to the maximum total Co content
in feed, set by the current EU legislation (2 mg Co/kg complete feed) is considered
safe, for all animal species/categories (EFSA 2012b).
