bered years) rather than the strict copyright date, which is sometimes the
year after the conference. I apologize for any confusion this may cause.
This book was prepared using lATgX, and it began as a set of notes prepared for a course in physical modeling I taught as part of the Waterways
Experiment Station’s Graduate Institute. I wish to thank those students
whose pointed questions forced me to understand more fully the subject
I was attempting to teach. I also want to thank all the physical modeling pioneers, practitioners, researchers, and technicians who have shared
their accumulated knowledge through the technical literature and during
numerous conversations.
Inevitably errors exist in this book despite my best efforts to eliminate
them. Most serious are any errors which might be due to my misinterpretation of the technical literature; and I apologize to those authors whose
works I may have misunderstood. Please bring these errors to my attention.
I want to express my appreciation to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
for its support of coastal engineering research in the United States, and I
wish to thank my colleagues at the Coastal Engineering Research Center
for many stimulating technical discussions over the years. Special thanks
go to Philip Liu, Cornell University, for his efforts as Series Editor and to
Gary Howell, CERC, for his review of the “measurements” chapter. Most
importantly, I want to thank my wife, Patty, and my daughters, Kelsey and
Kimberly, for their encouragement, support, and patience while this book
was being written.
